06-06-17 – VBS: Volunteers

VBS isn’t just Praise Worship, Bible Study, Crafts, and Recreation. It is much more than that. The children are the focus of VBS, but it wouldn’t happen without the staff of volunteers. The volunteers not only organize and conduct the basic part of the program, but also serve in important capacities such as:

  • Timekeeper

  • Musician

  • Arranger of humanitarian activities such as home visits to shut-ins

  • Arranger of special activities such as visiting a fortress

  • Driver

  • Kitchen staff

  • Assist the VBS workers as needed.

For example, the church in Fagaras provided a little snack every day consisting of a type of sandwich, juicebox and a candy bar.

On the last day of VBS, every child received a certificate of participation. It includes a picture and the child’s name, officially signed by the leaders. Now, that’s a keeper!

Volunteers printed and sealed each certificate in plastic laminate.

Ladies from the church prepared a lunch for the teams each day. Meals were also provided for team members lodged at the church. (Breakfast and dinner)

Lunch included soup, salad, bread, drink, main dish, and dessert. Now that’s a gourmet meal!

Lunch time gave the Codlea team and Fagaras team a chance to relax and share VBS stories with each other.

Working and sharing ideas with each other is important. This was a chance for the team to coordinate the planning for tomorrow’s activities. Volunteers often had good ideas about improving the VBS program.

It is not possible to count the ways volunteers/helpers/assistants contribute to the VBS program.

From year to year, these wonderful people contribute their time and talents to help the children have a closer relationship with God.

Repeat volunteers have a “group memory” that makes the continuity of the VBS program possible.

Three Cheers for the volunteers!!!

Next time, see some examples of the VBS team humanitarian, evangelistic and cultural activities.
