08-15-17 – Important Team Member Qualities

What one quality among many, must a VBS team member have? Do you have it?

Here are some qualities a VBS team member should have. Think of other qualities and add them to the list. An important one is missing.

  • faith in Jesus Christ

  • dedication

  • perseverance

  • cooperation with others

  • positive attitude

  • happy countenance

  • dependability

  • tireless worker

Finding volunteers who possess all these qualities can prove to be difficult. It concerned me when I first organized a VBS team. Then I thought of Romans 12:6-9 (NLT)

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach them well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

I realized the team was the sum of all the attributes possessed by each member. Some were strong in some areas but weak in other areas, but the total effect was a strong team.

Most people will gravitate to their strength and try to avoid weakness. A good leader will recognize this and mold a well-balanced team.

A good leader also recognizes the importance of a “challenge” and encourages individual members to ssstreeetcch their abilities, to reach the unreachable star. This is how the team grows in confidence and ability. They will meet a reasonable challenge. They will do and accomplish amazing things.

Last July during a VBS session, I had a discussion with 23 year old VBS team member from the Romanian. She said one thing that made a tremendous impression on me. She quietly confided, “Last March I could never see myself doing these things; leading a study group, supervising the registration process. I have grown so much by being part of this team. “

This year she is a co-leader of a team going to a nearby town and conducting a VBS in another church.

“I have grown so much by being part of this team. “

She had a special quality, a vital quality for every member of a VBS team. What was it? Look to see if you listed it with the other qualities I mentioned. Most likely it won’t be there but you will find it in 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NLT), “Three things will last forever – faith, hope and love – and the greatest of these is love. “

You want people on your team who love; love Christ, love others, and especially love children. We say, “God is Love.” We want to model that quality as we interact with the children. Dr. Robert H. Schuller (1926-2015) always ended his renowned “Hour of Power” by saying, “God loves you and so do I.”

God loves you and so do I.

Shouldn’t you be a part of helping children feel that way?

Get busy and start forming your team now. There are individuals in your church who just need to be asked, be encouraged, and inspired by Christ’s love. They are anxious to have this experience with you. They just don’t know it yet.

Make them aware. For guidance, go back and review my blogs, and sign up to be sure you receive the weekly blogs as they are published.
