11-07-17 – How Shall They Know You?

How will your Vacation Bible School (VBS) be remembered after you’ve packed up and gone home?

What responses do you hope to hear? Loved the songs, great crafts projects, memorable bible study lessons, entertaining, fun, Sally (teacher) was great, Felt the Holy Spirit on me…

If you ask for an evaluation from volunteers and children, these are some of the responses you might get:

” VBS is great! I thank God for this week because I learned many things and had a special time with the children.”

” These days with VBS are days I will remember all my life.”

“I feel my spirit is renewed! I cannot wait to work with VBS again next year.”

Last week I attended a memorial service for a dear friend. The pastor conducting the service asked the congregation of mourners how they would remember the departed. There were many attributes called out in response, over 20, but nothing sinful. Perhaps it was a good time that to think that we are all sinners, but that Christ died on the cross to forgive our sins. So we can forgive the shortcomings in others. That’s a good lesson for bible study.

Yes, I called out a response too, and thought when my time comes, what will people suggest about me? What will I be remembered by?

How will you be remembered?

The Bible has several places where it says we will be remembered. We will be remembered by our actions, we will be remembered by our joy, we will be remembered by our compassion, we will be remembered by our faith, and very important – we will be remembered by our love.

As you consider your possible participants for your VBS team, consider what they will be remembered by? Because they will be what the team is remembered by. Discuss this questions with your team. How do they want the team to be remembered when they leave.

Will the team leave the church, volunteers, participants and the children with a mutual desire to maintain the loving Christian relationship?

Will the VBS team, a composite of the team members, be remembered, as the song says, “They will know we are Christians by our love, by our love – they will know we are Christians by our love!”
