I recently enjoyed touring some islands in the Caribbean. Departing the ship, I would always be handed a promotional flyer or two encouraging me to visit a specific store ashore. Most often there was an offer of a FREE gift, NO PURCHASE NECESSARY!
Then, listed below, very prominently, were unique benefits of going to that particular store.
- Free gift
- Exceptional quality
- Exceptional value
- Special discounts available
- Unique to the store designs
- Worldwide service
- International reputation
- In business for ___ years
The free gift was usually something unique but of minimal value. We all knew that, but a lot of us stopped by the store anyway. Once in the store, we were invited to look at some enticing items at a good discount. And some people bought one or more of the irresistible bargains.
Later, back aboard the ship and after reading my Bible, I reached out to find something to mark my place and happened to pick up the flyer above. I read it again and chuckled to myself. Suppose the disciples, after crossing the lake with Jesus, stepped ashore and passed out “Jesus” flyers to the crowd.
The flyers would encourage the people to listen to Jesus. Why? Jesus:
- has a quality message
- words of unlimited value
- a 100% discount
- is the son of the one true God
- is available worldwide
- has been preaching everywhere
- performs miracles
- has a rapidly expanding reputation
The message is free, no obligation, no purchase necessary.
As we prepare to publicize Vacation Bible School (VBS), what can we do, what can we say that will encourage the boys and girls to attend?
What will our flyer say?

List the reasons, benefits for the children attending VBS. Don’t just mention the date, time and place, although that is important too. Give them reasons to act.
No purchase necessary. Jesus already paid the price!
